Does "Best Practices" really mean "this is how we want to do it so nah nah to you"?
I’ve noticed this, that when people talk about “best practices” in HPC, usually there is … well … a slant to their analysis. Put another way … can you get real unbiased information on “best practices” from a biased partisan, who might not have been exposed to alternative methods, and may have a financial interest in a particular set of practices? We see this with consultants seeking to sell their own services as “best practices”, with hardware and software vendors seeking to incorporate their products into “best practices” workflows.

Sounds like Lustre is getting something of a bad rap
Coverage from ISC09 in Hamburg has GPFS (from IBM) doing well, and Lustre being … well … Lustre. From InsideHPC’s coverage in the sidebar …
You can follow them on twitter directly, or through the feed on InsideHPC. I recommend the latter, as John and team put up often interesting commentary after this.

shades of things to come for Sun
There are still a few stalwarts who believe that Oracle’s purchase of Sun will continue their favorite projects and products. Then you see stuff like this:
Whoops.
Now fast forward a few weeks, for when Sun’s purchase closes.
So virtualbox is likely dead as a product. A few months ago I speculated that the purchase of Sun was brilliant in part due to all the technologies Oracle would get. Many would be shuttered.

speaking of accelerating ...
I have noticed that we are measuring quotes generated per day, versus last year when it was per week, or the years before where it was per month. Not a great metric, but we are definitely feeling pressed back in our seats as we accelerate hard. Its becoming apparent that I need to find additional pairs of hands, eyes, and brains (single or in pairs). Once we are sure all the stars are aligned, we’ll say more.

14.1% and accelerating ...
c.f. here
I head this morning that it was 14.1% in May. I wonder when we are going to stop using the euphemism “the longest recession since the great depression”.

Registering for an account: some things I have observed
So the day jobs online store is up. We provide some of the information openly, and some information, specifically pricing, is available to people who register for an account. Why do we do it this way? I’ve found this to be a good way to distinguish between people who are merely curious, but wouldn’t consider purchasing, and people who want information for a potential purchase. If you are serious about something, you are going to be willing to dig a little deeper.
