Dealing with the Tesla non-availability issue
If you haven’t heard, Tesla’s are hard to come by. We have several Pegasus systems that customers have purchased, that we can’t get the units for. All of the distributors and resellers we have spoken to indicate that they are getting a small fraction of their orders filled. We have had units on order over a month. Several more orders, and a hard deadline to get units filled.
We have heard rumors of fabrication problems and part recalls (given the past history with other chipsets, some believe this to be the case, though I am not sure … more likely a low yield coupled with something else).

A "FOR DEMONSTRATION USE ONLY" bios on the SAS controller ... huh?
Well, its not just that it says that it is a beta bios. This is annoying but ok, as you know the other bios will (hopefully) soon follow. Its that it says its “FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY”. I snapped a picture of the bios boot screen. Will post it tomorrow if there is interest. Apparently, the motherboards are indeed shipping this way. We were told originally that demand was high, and thats why they were delayed.

Benchmarks: mdbnch
Many moons ago, we used MDBNCH as a performance test case for new compilers and platforms. It is a molecular dynamics benchmark test. Large caches help it. So do fast instruction issue rates. And bloody fast FP execution units. For a long time I had wondered when we would see the first crossing of 1 second to complete this benchmark. It was getting closer and closer. So this evening, with gfortran, I built it with -O3.

There are fads, and then there are FADs
Sadly, technologists and IT people are not beyond buying into fads. A fad is basically a temporarily enhanced interest in some aspect of a market, or a product, or a technology. Fads pass. The repercussions of buying into fads can be … well … significant. So can the problem of missing the boat … not on fads, but fads that develop legs and become, effectively, movements, groundswells, or even disruptive technologies.

... and Rock gets canceled ...
From the NYT, a blog post on the passing of Rock.
Been there, done that. SGI’s Beast and Alien. Would have been interesting chips. Killed because Itanium was going to conquer all. No, wait, I am not kidding … It will … eventually … someday … It appears little bits of hardware keep falling off the map. And HPC. Its gone. What does this mean to SGE, Lustre, the compiler groups … Rock was an interesting chip.

A quandry on partnerships
The day job has had partnerships in the past, and maintains a number of active ones. We have reseller partnerships, joint service/support partnerships, development partnerships … and so forth. Not all (or even a majority) are listed on our site. What we view as a partnership is a relationship which will be mutually beneficial … aid both parties … without causing harm to either. If we are going to partner, then there is a little of an exchange of something of value, so we get something akin to a 1+1=3 moment, for both organizations.

OT: Red Wings vs Pittsburgh in game 7 of Stanley Cup final
Not really HPC, though our friends at PSC have named various supercomputers after Mario Lemieux … Tomorrow night … Wings vs Penguins, game 7. We may have to give special discounts if the Wings take the cup! [update] … and its over. No discount for winning the cup. Wings didn’t start playing until 8 minutes left in the 3rd period. Ugh.
